Jefferson Ends The Season With A Bang

On a crisp cold fall night with a hunter’s moon in the night sky the Jefferson Falcons and the Mount Olive Marauders were both on the hunt to finish their seasons on a high note.

In the first quarter Gavin McCarney ran for a touchdown for the Falcons and then Antony Vasile converted a two point conversion. Senior Falcon running back Frank Strumolo punched it in, in the second quarter. Then Jefferson quarterback Gavin McCarney connected to senior Bryan VanderPloeg for the score, followed with Gavin McCarney converting a two point conversion. But McCarney was not done for the night. To top off the first half playing as a defensive back, he intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown. Marauder running back Ned Ryan got Mount Olive on the board in the third quarter with a running touchdown. That would be all the touchdowns the Marauders would get for the night. Jefferson countered to Mount Olive’s touchdown with a touchdown of their own in the third quarter by wide receiver Thomas Macaluso for the last touchdown of the night.

Both teams last night intercepted two of each other’s passes. Linebackers Eddie Buoye and Andrew Kucerovy intercepted two passes for the Marauders. Also Falcon defensive backs Tho  ...Read More

The game time temperature was 40 degrees with a wind speed of six miles per hour. Much hot cocoa and chili was consumed at the coldest game of the season for the Falcons and Vikings.

The Vikings scored first with a touchdown by wide receiver Eric Krozser in the first quarter. The Falcons responded with a touchdown of their own by senior Bryan Vander Ploeg. That would be all the scoring Jefferson would do for the night. Parsippany Hills then raged with two touchdowns to John Murphy and Chris Brazicki and then topped it off with a fourth quarter touchdown.

One of the factors in the Falcon loss was fumbles. Andrew Cupo had a kick off fumble recovery in the second quarter. Then again in the fourth quarter the Falcons gave up another fumble. Running back Frank Strumolo one of Jefferson’s key players did not have much of an impact on the game, decreasing the Falcons’ chance of victory. The Falcons’ Head Coach Joe Mattessich explained what went wrong in the game for Jefferson by saying “we didn’t execute plays”.

Jefferson and Parsippany combined for six total sacks in the game. The Falcons had three sacks for the night that were made by Max Becker and Michael Palazzolo. Defensive lineman Michael Palazzolo also blocked a Parsippany Hills extra point. The Vikings three sacks were made by Nick DiGlacomo, Will Smith, and Ray Ramones.

This victory for the Vikings will help them with their record because on October 24th they will face off against the Montville  ...Read More

As half-time began on what was thought to be a very brisk Friday night, Jefferson’s homecoming candidates made their way out onto the football field to hear who would be named. The Falcon Community was pleased to hear that Sara Benjamin was named Jefferson’s 2009 Homecoming Queen.

Homecoming Queen is based on who the school population feels best represents the spirit of Jefferson Township High School. Two nominees are chosen from the underclassmen grades, while three nominees are chosen for the senior class. The senior nominees included Sam Silvent, Rita Jackson, and Colleen Small, the underclassmen nominees were Sara Benjamin, Gabbie Meade, Lauren Ferguson, Lauren Ransegnola, Carrie Wasdyke, and Hailey Jagger.

All the nominees looked astonishing in their dresses. There was a wide variety of colors and styles, which ranged from a flowing black to a long bright pink to a rocker-esque silver. As each candidate was escorted out, the cheers from the fans began to get louder and louder. Chants were started and horns were blowing.

When the second runner up was about to be announced, the crowd became the quietest it would be the entire night. Second Runner-up was Colleen Small while First Runner-up was Sam Silvent. Then, the moment of suspense came as the 2009 Homecoming Queen was announced. When Sara Benjamin’s name was called, the stands began shaking as a huge smile spread across her face. The entire football stadium was going wild as everyone watched  ...Read More

JEFFERSON SPORTS FINALLY GET COVERAGE THEY DESERVE

HSjox.com is excited to welcome Jefferson High School into their network! Third year English teacher Christine Czochanski will take on the role of Editor in Chief to promote high school journalism at Jefferson and provide the coverage of their sports on NJAC Sports Center.

By joining the HSjox.com network, Jefferson will give all students real life experience into the world of sports journalism on a conference wide stage. Literally thousands of people will be reading their stories and viewing their photographs. These students will be building their college resumes, helping parents and grand parents to follow games they could not attend and will be providing a historical archive for their school.

HSjox.com caught up with Ms. Czochanski to talk about how she feels about young people getting involved with journalism, why she thinks covering high school sports is important and who are some up & comer journalists at Jefferson.

How did you become so passionate about journalism and what do you like about sports journalism?
I am passionate about storytelling in any form, whether it is literature or journalism. Both inspire humanity, uncover universal truths about the world, and preserve culture. Sports journalism can take every day men and women and turn them into heroes. It follows individuals and teams as they fight, win, and overall endure.
