After two back-to-back winless seasons the 2009 Parsippany Redhawks football team enters this season facing new opponents and bringing a new winning attitude. Coach Craig Penna is impressed with what his players are delivering to the table this year. “These guys are committed to the program and are very motivated kids and they work as hard as they possibly can.” Penna said of his squad. “We’ve gone 0-20 in the last two years and some of these guys haven’t won a game in their whole high school career. So I think that motivated them more in the off season.” The re-alignment of the conference could benefit the Redhawks who haven’t enjoyed a winning season since 1998. Being a small Group 2 school, they won’t have to face big football powerhouses like West Essex, Mendham and Par Hills. Parsippany’s new schedule will put more similar sized schools in their place like Kittatinny, Newton and Hackettstown. OFFENSE The Redhawks offense will be headlined with the senior runningback tandem of Abe Sanchez (5’10”, 165lbs) and Brandon Saunders (5’8”, 150lbs). Sanchez and Saunders have a lot of varsity experience and bring veteran leadership to the offense. At quarterback, Parsippany will be led by junior Patrick Merril (5’11”, 155lbs) and sophomore Bryan Varsalone (5’10”, 160lbs).
